Why Glass is the Best Choice for Medicine Packaging?

Medicine glass bottles have been the standard for primary pharmaceutical packaging for over a century. Glass possesses unique properties that make it the safest and most reliable packaging material for storing medicines. As an inert material, glass does not chemically react with drug formulations, thus maintaining the purity and stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients throughout the shelf life.

The superior chemical resistance of glass means glass medicine bottles do not release foreign substances (extractables/leachables) into the medicine, unlike plastic packaging which may potentially release monomers, plasticizers, or other additives. This is critically important for medicines with sensitive formulations, especially injectable preparations, ophthalmic solutions, and medications with low-concentration active ingredients.

Additionally, glass medicine packaging provides excellent barrier properties against oxygen, moisture, and other gases without requiring additional protective coatings. Glass also withstands high-temperature autoclave sterilization processes, making it the only choice for parenteral preparations and certain other sterile formulations.

USP & EP Compliance for Medicine Glass Bottles

All medicine glass bottles supplied by Pharmaglass meet strict international pharmacopoeia standards. We test every product according to USP (United States Pharmacopeia) General Chapter <660> for glass containers and EP (European Pharmacopoeia) Section 3.2.1 for glass containers for pharmaceutical preparations.

USP <660> testing includes glass type classification based on hydrolytic resistance: Type I (borosilicate, high resistance), Type II (treated soda-lime), and Type III (soda-lime, moderate resistance). Pharmaglass supplies Type III glass bottles most commonly used for oral preparations, as well as Type I for parenteral preparations requiring the highest hydrolytic resistance.

Beyond international standards, our medicine glass bottles also meet the latest edition of the Indonesian Pharmacopoeia requirements. Compliance with all three pharmacopoeias ensures that Pharmaglass medicine glass bottles can be used for drug registration at Indonesia's BPOM as well as for export to countries referencing USP or EP standards.

FAQ — Medicine Glass Bottles

Why are glass bottles better for medicine packaging than plastic?

Glass bottles are superior for medicine packaging due to their inert nature (not reacting with drug formulations), impermeability to gases and moisture, resistance to autoclave sterilization, and absence of extractables/leachables that could contaminate medicines. Glass also provides UV protection (especially amber glass) and has a longer shelf life without material property changes.

What types of glass does Pharmaglass use for medicine bottles?

Pharmaglass uses two main types of glass for medicine bottles: Type III soda-lime glass for oral preparations such as syrups, suspensions, and solutions; and Type I borosilicate glass for parenteral preparations and medicines requiring high hydrolytic resistance. Both glass types meet USP, EP, and Indonesian Pharmacopoeia standards.

Do Pharmaglass medicine glass bottles meet BPOM standards?

Yes, all Pharmaglass medicine glass bottles are produced to meet primary medicine packaging requirements per BPOM regulations and are BPOM registered. We also hold ISO 9001 certification, and our bottles are produced to ISO 15378 standards for primary medicine packaging, ensuring product quality and safety for use as primary pharmaceutical packaging in Indonesia.
