Why Type III Glass for Pharmaceutical Syrup Bottles?

Pharmaglass glass syrup bottles are produced using Type III soda-lime glass material, the global industry standard for oral liquid preparation packaging. Type III glass has adequate hydrolytic resistance for syrups, suspensions, emulsions, and oral solutions, meeting the requirements of USP <660> (Containers — Glass) and EP Section 3.2.1.

The hydrolytic resistance of Type III glass ensures that the glass surface does not release excessive alkali ions into the syrup formulation during product shelf life. Hydrolytic resistance testing is performed on every production batch at Pharmaglass's integrated QC laboratory, with results documented in a Certificate of Analysis (CoA). Titration values must meet pharmacopoeia-specified maximum limits to ensure glass compatibility with drug formulations.

Beyond hydrolytic resistance, Pharmaglass Type III medicine syrup glass bottles are also tested for thermal shock resistance, ensuring bottles withstand sudden temperature changes during filling and storage processes. The production process uses controlled annealing technology to eliminate internal glass stress, producing strong and durable bottles.

Amber vs Clear Glass for Syrup Bottles

The choice between amber glass syrup bottles and clear glass is an important decision depending on the photostability of the drug formulation. Amber glass is the most popular choice for pharmaceutical syrup bottles due to its ability to block up to 90% of ultraviolet light in the 280-450nm wavelength range, which is the most damaging spectrum for active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Light-sensitive active ingredients such as vitamins (especially vitamin B2/riboflavin, vitamin A, vitamin C), certain antibiotics (tetracycline, fluoroquinolones), and some antihistamines require the light protection provided by amber glass. ICH Q1B photostability studies recommend amber glass as primary packaging for formulations proven photosensitive.

Meanwhile, clear glass syrup bottles offer the advantage of direct visual inspection of medicine contents, facilitating detection of color changes, turbidity, or foreign particles. Clear glass is ideal for light-stable formulations and products requiring attractive visual appearance. Many antacid syrups, digestive medicines, and herbal supplements use clear glass bottles.

Amber Glass

  • - UV protection 280-450nm (blocks 90% UV rays)
  • - Ideal for light-sensitive medicines
  • - Industry standard for antibiotic & vitamin syrups
  • - Meets USP, EP requirements for light-resistant containers

Clear (Flint) Glass

  • - Direct visual inspection of product contents
  • - Suitable for light-stable formulations
  • - Premium and attractive appearance
  • - Popular for antacids, herbal supplements, mouthwash

Cap Options for Glass Syrup Bottles

Pilfer-Proof Cap

Standard cap with tamper-evident ring that breaks upon first opening, providing product safety assurance. Available in PP and aluminum materials.

Child-Resistant Cap

Child-resistant cap (CRC) requiring push-down & turn motion to open. Mandatory for certain medications per child safety regulations.

Measuring Cup Cap

Cap with integrated measuring cup for dosing convenience. Available with volume graduations of 5ml, 10ml, 15ml, and 30ml. Popular for children's syrups and cough medicines.

Flip-Top Cap

Flip-top cap for easy direct pouring. Suitable for syrups requiring repeated one-handed use, such as antacids and herbal supplements.

Pharmaglass Glass Syrup Bottle Production Process

The glass syrup bottle production process at Pharmaglass follows strict cGMP standards from start to finish. Starting from melting raw glass materials (silica sand, soda ash, limestone, and feldspar plus pigments for amber glass) at 1,500-1,600°C in a modern furnace, producing molten glass with tightly controlled chemical composition.

Molten glass is then formed into bottles using blow-and-blow or press-and-blow technology on automatic forming machines. Every bottle undergoes a controlled annealing process in a lehr oven to eliminate internal stress, producing bottles with optimal mechanical strength. Annealing temperature is maintained at 540-570°C with precise cooling rates.

After forming and annealing, every pharmaceutical syrup bottle passes through a series of automated inspections: dimensional check (body diameter, height, neck finish), wall thickness measurement, stress analysis using a polariscope, and visual inspection with high-resolution cameras. Bottles passing inspection are then packed in shrink-wrap pallets with partitions to prevent inter-bottle contact during shipping.

FAQ — Pharmaceutical Glass Syrup Bottles

Why do glass syrup bottles use Type III soda-lime glass?

Type III soda-lime glass is the most suitable and cost-effective glass type for pharmaceutical syrup bottles. This material has adequate hydrolytic resistance for oral liquid preparations per USP <660> and EP 3.2.1 standards. Type III glass provides an optimal balance between quality, safety, and price, making it the global industry standard for medicine syrup packaging.

What is the difference between amber and clear glass syrup bottles?

Amber glass syrup bottles provide protection against UV light (280-450nm) that can degrade light-sensitive active pharmaceutical ingredients. Amber glass can block up to 90% of UV rays. Clear glass bottles are used for formulations not sensitive to light and offer the advantage of visual inspection of medicine contents. The choice between amber and clear is determined by the photostability properties of the drug formulation.

What sizes of glass syrup bottles are available at Pharmaglass?

Pharmaglass provides glass syrup bottles in 7 standard sizes: 60ml, 100ml, 120ml, 150ml, 200ml, 300ml, and 500ml. All sizes are available in amber and clear glass materials. Custom sizes can also be produced with a MOQ of 50,000 units and custom mold lead time of 6-10 weeks.

What types of caps are available for glass syrup bottles?

Pharmaglass provides various cap types for glass syrup bottles: (1) Pilfer-proof cap - standard cap with tamper-evident ring, (2) Child-resistant cap (CRC) - child safety cap per regulations, (3) Measuring cup cap - cap with integrated measuring cup, (4) Flip-top cap - for easy pouring. All caps are available in various colors and materials (PP, PE, aluminum).

What is the production lead time for glass syrup bottles at Pharmaglass?

The production lead time for standard glass syrup bottles (using existing molds) is 2-4 weeks after PO confirmation. For new custom molds, lead time is 6-10 weeks including mold making and first production run. Delivery across Indonesia requires an additional 3-7 business days. Annual contract programs with scheduled delivery are also available.
