Glass Types & Materials

What types of glass does Pharmaglass produce?

Pharmaglass produces glass bottles from soda-lime glass (Type III) material, the most common glass type for pharmaceutical, beverage, and cosmetic packaging. Type III glass has adequate hydrolytic resistance for most oral, topical, and beverage products per USP <660> and EP 3.2.1 standards.

What is the difference between Type I, II, and III glass?

Type I is borosilicate glass with the highest chemical resistance, suitable for injection/parenteral products. Type II is surface-treated (dealkalized) soda-lime glass, suitable for acidic and neutral products. Type III is standard soda-lime glass suitable for oral products, topicals, beverages, and cosmetics. Pharmaglass produces Type III glass.

What glass colors are available?

We provide glass in: Clear/Flint (transparent), Amber (dark brown for UV protection), Cobalt Blue, and Green. Amber is most popular for pharmaceutical products as it protects formulas from UV-induced degradation. Clear glass is ideal for beverage and cosmetic products.

Why is amber glass used for medicines?

Amber glass contains iron and manganese oxides that absorb UV light at 290-450nm wavelengths, protecting drug formulas from photodegradation. This is important for light-sensitive medications such as vitamins, liquid antibiotics, and cough syrups. USP standards require amber glass to absorb at least 90% UV at 290-450nm.

Is Pharmaglass glass food-grade?

Yes, all our glass products meet food-grade and pharmaceutical-grade standards. Our glass materials have passed heavy metal migration testing (Pb, Cd, As) per BPOM, FDA, and EU regulations. These certifications ensure product safety for direct contact with medicines, food, and beverages.

What are the advantages of glass over plastic for pharmaceutical packaging?

Glass offers several advantages: chemically inert (does not react with drug formulas), impermeable to gas and moisture, heat resistant (autoclave sterilization), does not absorb odors/colors, 100% recyclable without quality degradation, and provides a premium perception. However, glass is heavier and more fragile than plastic.

What is the wall thickness of Pharmaglass bottles?

Wall thickness varies by size and application: small bottles (15-60ml) 1.5-2.0mm, medium bottles (100-250ml) 2.0-3.0mm, large bottles (300-1000ml) 2.5-4.0mm. Thickness is designed to meet mechanical strength standards (internal pressure test, thermal shock test) while maintaining weight efficiency.

Are coated glass bottles available?

Yes, we offer several coating options: organic coating to increase mechanical strength and scratch resistance, silicone coating for production line smoothness, frosted/satin finish for premium appearance, and colored spray coating for decorative purposes. Coating can increase bottle durability by up to 40%.

Can glass bottles be recycled?

Yes, glass is 100% recyclable without quality loss. Recycled glass (cullet) can be mixed in the production process up to 80% without affecting final product quality. Pharmaglass actively uses cullet in production as part of our sustainability commitment.

What is cobalt blue glass and what is it used for?

Cobalt blue glass is deep blue glass containing cobalt oxide. Besides providing a premium and distinctive appearance, cobalt blue glass also offers good UV protection (though not as good as amber). Cobalt blue is popular for essential oil packaging, aromatherapy products, and premium cosmetic products seeking visual differentiation.
